Character Appraisals
Conservation Areas, introduced in 1967 under Section 61 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1967, are defined as 'areas of special architecture or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to protect or enhance'.
Stirling Council's Conservation Areas can be viewed here, however, should the settlement in question be within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, for information on conservation areas you should check their Adopted Local Plan.
The Act also required the local authority to formulate and publish a set of proposals for the preservation and enhancement of each Conservation Area, by way of a thorough appraisal of its character and appearance. These appraisals provide a framework for assessing development proposals within the Conservation Areas in question and are Supplementary Guidance (SG07) to the Councils local plans.

In association with the publication of the Proposed Local Development Plan, Proposed Conservation Area Character Appraisals (or shorter statements) have been produced as Supplementary Guidance (SG07) to the Local Development Plan, for all the existing Conservation Areas. The Council is considering altering Conservation Area boundaries within some of the Areas and reviewing the use of Article 4 Directions and the classes included. Details of this are contained within the Appraisals/Statements. A new Conservation Area is also proposed for Thornhill.
