The school has been highlighted by sportscotland for putting pupils’ voices at the centre of decision making in how sport was delivered.
Children at the school created a pupil-led sports council which worked closely with Active Stirling and other school staff to gain feedback and request extra-curricular clubs.
The school has also been recognised for giving opportunities to care experienced children and those from deprived backgrounds to access extra-curricular sporting clubs.
Chris Dick, Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport (PEPAS) Coordinator at Fallin Primary School said: “Our partnership with Active Stirling has been invaluable, with Active Schools staff regularly in and around the school to support clubs, assist teachers with PE sessions and ‘training’ P6 Sports Leaders who have been leading games sessions in the infant playground and supporting their own development.
“None of this would have been achieved without the support of school staff who were always willing to give up time to run clubs, ensure children were able to attend festivals and undertake development work as well as supporting our sports council and participants.”
'The best place to be active'
Children and Young People Convener, Cllr Danny Gibson said: “Pupils, staff and the local community at Fallin Primary School have all played their part in earning this national recognition from sportscotland.
“There are wide-ranging benefits from sport, exercise and physical activity, particularly for young people, and the work going on at Fallin Primary is a great example of how we are making Stirling the best place to be active.
“A huge well done to everyone at Fallin Primary for making every effort to ensure that pupils not only take part, but are engaged and motivated to have a leading role in their physical education.”
Awarded by sportscotland, the Gold Schools Sport Award encourages young people to take part in extra-curricular sporting activities by putting their views at the heart of how they are planned, structured and delivered. It also supports schools in forging connections with local communities to provide pathways for young people to access and succeed in sport.
'Brilliant achievement'
Chief Executive of sportscotland, Forbes Dunlop, said: “The importance of sport in school life cannot be underestimated and being awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award is testament to the hard work and effort of pupils, teachers, and volunteers across a school. Many congratulations to Fallin Primary School on receiving their gold rating, every person who has been involved in getting here should be very proud of this brilliant achievement.
“As the national agency we are committed to helping build communities across the country where sport is a way of life, and that young people are at the heart of it. Working with local authorities, governing bodies, and national partners, we are strengthening the links between school sport and the communities around them, as well as helping schools continuously improve and celebrate successful school sport models.”
