International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March, and honours the achievements of women across all aspects of life - social, economic, cultural, and political - while also advocating for gender equality.

Efforts to support women in business that make a tangible impact towards gender equality are being spearheaded in Stirling by organisations such as STEP Scotland, who operate the Business Gateway service in Stirling on behalf of Stirling Council.

Over one third of tenants at STEP are female-led businesses and women lead 57% of the start-ups that were offered support by the organisation in 2024.

The support offered by STEP includes practical, tailored advice to businesses, providing guidance on helping start-ups, digital skills and rural specific support.

Laura Melville, STEP’s Director of Property and Operations, said: “We see more and more women choosing STEP as their business base, and that’s because we offer more than just office space.

“We create a supportive community where businesses can collaborate, access expert advice and grow at their own pace. Whether it’s providing flexible lease options, networking opportunities, or business support, we’re committed to ensuring that all of our businesses have everything they need to succeed.”

'Setting an example'

Stirling Council Depute Leader, Cllr Jen Preston said: “As we mark International Women’s Day, it’s encouraging to see organisations such as STEP actively supporting women in business across Stirling.

“With female-led businesses making up a third of their tenants and a strong track record of supporting female entrepreneurs, they are making a real difference. This kind of support is invaluable in creating a more inclusive economy that offers opportunities to entrepreneurial local women and helps Stirling’s business community thrive.”

Within Stirling Council 72% of the workforce are women with a similar ratio in key leadership positions.

'Challenge barriers'

Cllr Preston added: “We’re proud to be setting an example of women featuring prominently in positions of leadership with 70% of our Corporate Management Team and managerial roles are held by women.

“While this event is a day to celebrate progress, it’s also an opportunity to commit to positive action and there is always more we can do to challenge barriers and biases and to build on the policies and initiatives we have in place.”

International Women's Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, with the first event held in 1911.  For more information, visit: International Women’s Day.
