Public Health funerals
Public Health funerals are arranged by the Local Authority under the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016. These are for people who have died and have no known relatives to arrange or pay for their funeral or have relatives who are unable to arrange their funeral.
In such circumstances, the Local Authority in which the deceased died, will make arrangements for the funeral and where possible, reclaim any costs incurred in doing so.
Public Health funerals are dealt with by specialist officers within the Public Health Team of the Service.
Public Health funerals carried out in the last 5 years by this Local Authority.
We are responsible for 62 separate burial grounds throughout the Council area, covering a collective area of 51 hectares. There are lairs available for both the internment of coffins and caskets of cremated remains. The National Records of Scotland has information on registering a death.
