Automatic RenewalsFrom October 2021, Stirling Council Libraries will automatically renew items you have on loan three days prior to their due date. You don’t have to sign up for this as it will apply automatically. The majority of items borrowed from our libraries (books, DVDs, audiobooks, music CDs) are eligible for up to four automatic renewals. Ebooks are not included but can be renewed in your ebooks account.

Your item may not renew automatically if -

  • There is a waiting list for the item
  • The item has reached its renewal limit
  • Your card has expired
  • Your account is blocked due to overdue items and/or bills owed (past fines have been waived)
  • The item belongs to a collection that does not allow auto renewals (such as short loan materials and items lent to us by libraries outside Stirling Council Libraries).

If you have a question about an item that hasn’t renewed, please contact your local library for assistance.

Stirling Council libraries no longer charge fines but we ask that borrowers return items as quickly as they are able to or when requested. If you don’t return when asked, you will receive overdue notices and may be blocked from further borrowing.

NotificationsIf you have an email address on file, you will receive a renewal notice three days before the item’s due date, giving the new due dates for each item. You will also be notified of any items that couldn’t be renewed and will be asked to return. To ensure you receive these notices, please check that your contact information is up to date. You can also check your account online.

Loan periodAny items that can’t be renewed will still be due on the date stamped on your item when you borrowed it, giving your full loan period. When items are renewed 3 days prior to the due date, the loan period is calculated from the date it renews which will be slightly shorter.

Opting outYou cannot opt out of auto-renewals but you can return items as soon as you are finished with them, irrespective of due date.
