The Scottish Government Mental Health Strategy 2017-2027 outlines the ambition for Scotland to ‘prevent and treat mental health problems with the same commitment, passion and drive as we do with physical health problems’, which is an ambition that Stirling Council has set out to achieve.

Improving children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing is one of three improvement areas set out in the Children’s Services Plan 2017-2020 with the following actions:
- Improve pupil participation in planning and decision making around mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Roll out mental health first aid – young person’s training to adults who work closely with young people.
- Complete a mapping exercise of current supports and use data to help inform of future improvements.
- Improve communication in relation to available services to ensure that children and young people get the right support at the right time.
- Develop an evidence-based relationships and resilience framework to improve children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Ensure care pathways include mental health and emotional wellbeing for young people on the edges of and in, secure care.
- Develop multi-agency pathways that work in a co-ordinated way to support children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Young people across Stirling have been actively involved in the planning and design of events such as the Gathering and Just Breathe that aim to capture young people’s views, to raise awareness of mental health, and help reduce the stigma. A small group of young people have also be involved in an innovative project with Civtech, exploring a technological solution to a challenge question of ‘How can technology help young people experiencing mental health difficulties start the conversation about how they are feeling and where they can access support?’
