- If you believe that a Council property is empty and the Council may be unaware of this, please contact us by calling 01786 404040 or email email@example.com so we can make sure it is drained down.
- During any long-lasting period of extreme cold, keep your heating on, even at a low temperature, as much as possible and ensure that the whole house is warm. This will reduce the risk of frozen pipes. If you are unsure how your heating controls work, please call 01786 404040 and we will advise you how to set your heating for the winter. If your water supply becomes frozen
- Turn off the water at the main stopcock.
- Turn on all cold water taps to drain the system. Before you do this, put the plug in the bath to collect water for washing or flushing the toilet.
- Don’t turn on any hot water taps, as the hot water cylinder may collapse if the pipes feeding it are frozen.
- Switch off water heaters and let coal fires die down.
- Contact our Repairs Team on 01786 404040.
- If pipes freeze, you can TRY TO DEFROST THEM FIRST by using warm air (a hairdryer perhaps) a hot water bottle or warm water. DON’T use fierce heat or a naked flame – they could cause the pipe to burst or start a fire.
- Start by warming the pipe slowly as close as possible to the tap or valve, then work along it.
If you do get a burst pipe
- Turn off the water supply at the main stopcock.
- Switch off any water heaters.
- Let any solid fuel fires die down.
- Turn on all cold water taps to drain your system.
- Collect water in the bath for washing.
- Warn any neighbours who may suffer water damage.

Simple tips to protect you, your home and your belongings
- Jot down a few important numbers in case something goes wrong, such as the councils number 01786 404040, your electricity, gas and water suppliers.
- If you can, keep some extra food in your cupboards or freezer in case you can’t get out.
- Think about your health and make sure your prescriptions are ordered in plenty of time and if you can have simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies stored in your cupboard.
- If you can keep your house warm day and night.
- Clear your paths to prevent falls.
- When temperatures are very low, open your loft hatch to let warm air into the loft space.
- Make sure you know where your stopcock is and check you are able to turn it off.
