Private water supply is one which is not provided by Scottish Water.
This may come from:
- a loch
- burn
- spring
- well
- river
- pond
- borehole
or a combination of these.
The supply may serve only one property or a number of different properties. Private Water Supplies are regulated under the Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Classification of Private Water Supplies
Private water supplies are classified as being either a Type A or Type B supply. These are defined as:
Type A:
Supplies serving 50 or more persons, or supplies to commercial or public activities irrespective of size
Type B
Supplies serving only domestic premises with less than 50 persons supplied.
Sampling of private water supplies
The purpose of sampling is to check compliance with a range of microbes and chemicals which indicate the wholesomeness of the water and whether it is safe to drink. The cost of such sampling is borne by owners of properties served by the supply. The charges indicated below will apply for the period of 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2017.
The requirements for sampling are determined by The Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Type A
Routinely monitored and samples were taken at least once a year.
- Cost for a sampling of a Type A supply £133 – £138
Type B
- There is no statutory requirement to sample type B supplies routinely.
- Should you wish to have your supply sampled, this can be arranged upon request
- Cost for sampling a Type B supply is £115
