Equality and Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (EqSIA)
Equality and Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (EqSIA)
Assessing current practice and future proposals
Under the Equality Act 2010, the Council must assess its current practice and future proposals from an equalities perspective. It must also consider how inequalities caused by socio-economic factors and disadvantage – poverty, can be reduced when making strategic decisions. While these requirements were originally introduced separately, since October 2022 these have been met through the use of integrated Equality and Socio-economic Impact Assessment (EqSIA).
Equality and Socio-economic Impact Assessment is a tool to help the Council take effective action on equality and disadvantage on behalf of its communities, citizens and employees through assessing the potential impact of proposals on them as an integral part of its decision making.
In addition to helping the Council meet its responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010, the benefits of undertaking Equality and Socio-economic Impact Assessments include:
- Enabling the Council to demonstrate how its embeds equality into its everyday work
- Ensuring the Council identifies and addresses potential unintended and unlawful discrimination
- Helping ensure Council policies and practices are responsive to the needs of our citizens and communities
- Helping promote equality of opportunity and foster good relations between individuals and groups in our communities
- Supporting informed decision making in an increasingly challenging operational environment
- Improving transparency about decision making
