Central Regional Council at the Last Grand Match, 7th February 1979

On 6th February 1979, curlers were on alert as news outlets in Scotland announced that the Grand Match was to take place the following morning. The winter had been particularly harsh that year, but the severity meant the Lake of Menteith had frozen solid with the ice over 6 inches deep…just enough for a curling match!

With the rinks marked out the previous day, curlers from all over Scotland raced down the country to get there on time for the 11am start. Thousands of curlers and spectators took to the lake to watch the Grand Match take place for the first time since 1963.

The Communications Unit team from Central Regional Council headed down to the event and captured some great moments from the day.
