Almost 40 young people who have faced barriers to learning from across Stirling have been recognised for their excellent educational achievements.

The first instalment of the Stirling Recognising Achievement Awards saw 38 senior phase pupils (S4-S6) at seven secondary settings receive a certificate at the end of the school year after being nominated by their teachers.

Some of the areas they excelled in included:

  • Improved confidence or engagement in learning
  • Developing skills for work or future learning
  • Increased self-leadership or leadership of others
  • Sporting or creative achievements
  • Community achievements
  • Achieving personal goals.

Thoroughly deserve

Convener of Stirling Council’s Children and Young People Committee, Cllr Susan McGill said: “These awards reaffirm our commitment to celebrate the achievements and successes of Stirling’s young people who have made considerable progress in their education despite facing a range of barriers.

“In a really challenging school year due to the pandemic, these young people have shown remarkable resilience, enthusiasm and hard work and thoroughly deserve this recognition.”

Really humbling

Vice Convener, Cllr Christine Simpson said: “It has been really humbling to read about the incredible achievements of these pupils following a difficult 12 months for everyone involved in our schools.

“A huge congratulations to all the recipients of these awards – you should all be really proud and I hope it was a nice way to head into a well-earned summer break.”

Case Studies:

Several teachers nominated Rachel Kane, an S5 pupil at Balfron High School, for an award due to her significant contributions to the school and local community through sport.

She excelled in her role as House Captain and led the planning and delivery of six weeks of covid-safe sports sessions for primary school children; supported children with additional support needs to engage in learning; completed her sports leader award and used creative ways of engaging with other pupils in being active during the pandemic.

In the wider community, Rachel coaches football to children at a local football club five evenings per week. Teachers praised her communication and leadership skills and also recognised that she is generally a good person to be around.

Conor Pryde, an S4 pupil at St Modan's High School Autism Provision, was nominated for his efforts and achievements within the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Conor has overcome many barriers to accessing learning, becoming a valuable member of the group and inspiration to others. He hopes to continue to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award in S5. His enthusiasm and efforts were acknowledged by the staff team who were keen to nominate him for the new award.
