Stirling Council Fisheries will continue to offer some of the best value for money fishing in the UK by freezing the price for all permits in the 2021 season.

Councillors on the local authority’s Planning and Regulation Panel approved the move this week (8 December), which will mean anglers can fish on the Forth and Teith rivers for nine months for just £200.

Under the approved pricing structure, youths aged 12 to 21 can fish the whole season for only £15, while those under 12 can fish for free with a paying adult on a catch and release basis.

The Council owns and manages salmon fishing rights on the Forth and Teith rivers, which provide recreational opportunities for any angler on some of Scotland’s most scenic waterways.

Encourage a wide and diverse range of people

Chair of the Panel, Cllr Alasdair MacPherson said: “The last 12 months has been a challenging year for all sectors of the economy and fishing hasn’t been immune to that despite it being an outdoor activity.

“By freezing the permit price we hope to encourage a wide and diverse range of people to fish on our beautiful rivers for the new season in 2021, whether they are seasoned in the sport or budding anglers.

“As we hopefully look forward to a return to normality next year and an end to travel restrictions, we are also keen to welcome visitors back to our fantastic fishing beats from across Scotland along with tourists from further afield.”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Council’s fishing beats had to close for 10 weeks between March and May this year.

Councillors on the Panel agreed that anyone who purchased a season permit before 24 March 2020 will receive 23% off their 2021 like-for-like purchase.

Only right

Vice Chair, Cllr Danny Gibson said: “We are extremely thankful to our community of loyal anglers who continued to use our fishing beats in a safe and responsible manner, in line with the national guidance, once they reopened in May.

“It’s only right that we provide this discount given the period of closure in the spring, and we will ensure all those eligible are informed of this offer.”

The current Covid-19 restrictions unfortunately means the annual launch event for the new fishing season, which is traditionally held in Callendar on 1 February, will not take place next year.
