Borrowing, renewals and requests

Information on borrowing and renewing items from Stirling Council libraries.

Borrowing items

All items can be borrowed for 3 weeks that include:

  • Audiobooks
  • Books
  • CDs (held at Central Library but can be reserved and sent to other libraries)
  • DVDs
  • eBooks
  • Tablets

You can return library books to any library in the Stirling Council area.

Renewing items

The library will automatically renew items you have on loan three days before their due date up to four times. You can renew ebooks in your ebook account. Short loan materials and items lent to us by libraries in other areas are not automatically renewed.

If you have an email address on file, you will receive a renewal notice three days before the item’s due date, giving the new due dates for each item. We'll also tell you about any items that cannot be renewed and ask you to return them. To ensure you receive these notices, check that your contact information is up to date. Check your account online.

Your item may not renew automatically if there is a waiting list for it, the item has reached its renewal limit, or if your account has been blocked.

Any items that can not be renewed will still be due on the date stamped on your item when you borrowed it. When items are renewed 3 days before the due date, the loan period is calculated from the date it renews.

Reservations and Requests

Reservations

All books on the library catalogue can be reserved free of charge online via our library catalogue or in your local library and can be delivered to the pick-up library of your choice.

Requests

Readers can make a request for a book not available on the library catalogue. You can place a request at any of our Stirling Libraries free of charge. Readers can also suggest an item for purchase online via our library catalogue.

All requests and suggestions for items not in stock will be reviewed in line with the principles set out in our ‘Stock Management Policy’. There is no guarantee that we will purchase any item.

Inter-Library Loan Service

Stirling Libraries operate an Inter-Library Loan Service for specific items not held by our libraries. The library service will endeavour to borrow the material on your behalf and there is a charge for this service, see Library charges.

Overdue items

There are no fines for overdue items but we ask that borrowers return items as quickly as they are able to or when requested. If you don’t return when asked, you will receive overdue notices and may be blocked from further borrowing.

If you have a question about an item that hasn’t renewed, contact your local library.
